TODAY SHOW – Birth Photography with Selena Rollason | Brisbane
On Tuesday 20th September, 2016 I (Selena Rollason) was interviewed by Sonia Kruger and David Campbell from the Today Show.
It was wonderful to share my passion for birth photography, my work and one of my favorite birth stories.

SONIA : Well, it’s not the place you’d expect to see “lights, camera and action”. But bringing professional photographers into the birthing suite is the hot new trend for expectant parents. Take a look.
SLIDESHOW: They’re moments filled with raw emotion, and Brisbane photographer Selena Rollason is there to capture them. From the miracle of delivery, to the parents meeting their baby for the first time.. the results are nothing short of breathtaking. And the stunning shots have earned her the crown as Australia’s Professional Birth Photographer of the year.
DAVID: Everybody’s doing it. Selena joins us now from Brisbane. Good morning. Selena, congratulations on your award.
SELENA: Thank you. Thank you
DAVID: You’ve been in the business for five years now, and it was your son’s birth that got you started, is that right?
SELENA: Yeah that’s right. I ended up having to have a caesarean with him after quite a traumatic experience and so having photos from that birth was really important and was good to help me with healing and processing that experience. so it was after that, that I was pretty keen to provide memories like that and photos like that for other families to help them process whatever might happen when they have their babies.
SONIA: You can never tell when a baby is going to come, so you’re on call at all hours of the morning. Tell us, what does a typical birthing, photography session entail?
SELENA: Well often I’m phoned at 11 o’clock at night. Often labour kicks in the middle of the night so I’m often phoned at 11, 12, 1 o’clock in the morning.
SONIA: Yeah it never seems to happen at a convenient time does it?
SELENA: haha no it doesn’t.
DAVID: Yeah its never in the afternoon. Ah it came just around lunchtime. Fabulous.
SELENA: No babies choose when they come.
SONIA: So then what happens?
SELENA: So then I will generally head into the hospital with the families, or if its a home birth I’ll head to their home, and I’ll be with them throughout the labour and the delivery, and usually the first 2 to 3 hours after the baby arrives.
DAVID: That is a long day for you. But some people question why parents want to remember every moment of labour, what’s your response to them?
SELENA: Oh look I guess from a woman’s perspective, and as a Mum I have 4 children of my own, and from a woman’s perspective you don’t remember a great deal from the day your baby arrives. You know there’s pain, you’re drugged up often and so one of the beautiful things about birth photography is that it gives a completely different light, a different perspective on what the day actually involves and brings in a human element as opposed to a medical element or a negative element. Obviously when we think about birth photography we think about a baby being born but the human element and the emotions, the reactions, the expressions of the family. The bonding. Meeting the baby. All of those special moments are, yeah, very special.
SONIA: Yeah it’s extraordinary, exactly. And no two births are the same….
SELENA: Not at all
SONIA: ….but we hear that one was particularly memorable and was a quick delivery. What happened?
SELENA: Yeah so a couple of years ago or a little while ago, I photographed the birth of a Mum [baby] who engaged me because she’d had a very traumatic first labour and delivery and so she engaged me to capture photos of the second baby just in case things didn’t go to plan and so that she would have some amazing, beautiful memories to look back on. And when she had the baby, she actually didn’t realise that she’d had the baby so bub came so fast in the water and she got a surprise. She got such a shock that she’d successfully given birth to this baby and didn’t even realise she’d had her.
DAVID: Look its a really interesting thing. And saves us Dads carrying lots of equipment into the room so thank you Selena for doing that. You can find Selena on Facebook. Head to facebook.com/brisbanebirthphotography. I think that that business is just going to get bigger.
SONIA: I think so.
DAVID: Thank you Selena
SELENA: Thank you.
