Brisbane Doula, Birth, Photographer, Photography, Photos, Doula, pregnancy, support, post-natal, Selena RollasonBut…what is a doula?

A Doula is your #1 supporter (outside of your partner of course)!!
They exist purely to support YOU and YOUR wishes to birth the way you want….or need.

Many women (and their partners) feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to turn for support when preparing for birth.
This is a common feeling and yet its one that I believe can be averted.

Evidence shows that women who are supported, and feel in control, are not only more successful at achieving their preferred birth
but recover better if things do not go to plan.

What does a doula do?

A Doula provides one-on-one, personalised emotional and physical support in the lead up to, during and following the birth of your new baby.
They help you to navigate your way through the birth process, understand your options, advocate for you and support you to achieve a
beautiful birth experience that you will remember fondly for life.

And because everyone is different – they support you in whatever capacity you need them to!!

As your doula, it is common for me to support you by:

  • being a listening ear and providing support during pregnancy
  • helping you to understand your options for the birth
  • teaching you birth skills to use during delivery
  • assisting you to prepare your birth preferences/plan
  • working through your previous birth experiences
  • navigating the hospital and medical systems
  • advocating for your wishes and preferences
  • providing physical and emotional support during labour and delivery
  • debrief with you post-birth
  • …..and so much more!

A doula’s primary aim is for you to walk away from childbirth happy with your birth experience!!

Brisbane Doula, Birth, Photographer, Photography, Photos, Doula, pregnancy, support, post-natal, Selena RollasonWhy I’m a doula

From the first moment that I stepped into the birth suite in 2011, I have felt drawn to providing support for the women during birth.

Much of this has stemmed not only from my own birth journey’s but from consistently seeing women’s wishes and preferences ignored by
their care providers….often leading to less than ideal birth experiences.

My 4 very different birth experiences (from a scary emergency caesarean section with my first baby through to a hands off VBA2C with my fourth),
heartbreaking infertility struggles and devastating losses have led me to understand and relate to the needs of a diverse range of women.

In both my roles as a photographer and a doula, I’ve increasingly become a “constant” for women who have suffered
birth trauma supporting them through rough times in the birth suite – becoming a listening ear afterwards and
someone to debrief with/empathise with in the post-partum recovery period.

Being a doula is something very special indeed and I love to see women supported in their wishes.

Doula + Photographer?

I debated for a long time whether one can be both a doula AND a photographer at the same time….my answer is YES and NO.

Working in both capacities is definitely possible however there are times where being your doula is more important
than being your photographer. Sometimes there is a compromise.

So with that in mind, we work together to tailor my services to your individual needs. What role do you want me to
take in the birth suite and at what point? We work together on that…as a team.
