In 2012, I captured some treasured and heartfelt memories of baby Riley and his parents, Kelly and Lee, after their baby boy grew his angel wings in the womb at full term. This amazing family have since gone on to use their heartbreak for good and dedicated their lives to supporting other bereaved families suffering stillbirth, pregnancy/infant loss or the death of a child during early childhood.

I have now photographed all three of Kelly and Lee’s beautiful children and watched them grow together as a family. It’s been an honour to support the work they are doing and be involved with their efforts to change the lives of other families like them – something I am dedicated to continuing in the years to come.

The Surrogate Birth of Katie | Brisbane Birth Photography

surrogacy, brisbane birth photography, birth photographer, selena rollason, Caboolture, caesarean, birth, childbirth, surrogate, ivf, baby, newborn, incredible, amazing, love, beautiful, mother, newborn, girl, intended parents, intended mother, selfless, katie** Note: Tissues may be required before viewing **

After 14 years of hoping and trying, 22 Rounds of IVF, the devastating loss of twins and a heartbreaking hysterectomy following major health complications, a gorgeous couple FINALLY became parents…..thanks to the beautiful gift of surrogacy.

Due to the breech presentation of the baby, little Katie was delivered by caesarean section on 22nd August, 2016. The surrogate, her husband and myself were the only ones allowed into theatre while Katie’s parents anxiously waited for their baby girl back in the ward.

When little Katie was finally rolled in by the midwife in her hospital cot….the emotions and tears ran deep!! They were then brought on for a second time when their surrogate Mum returned from recovery.

It was a beautiful day for all involved and a dream come true for this wonderful family.

A big congratulations to the family!!!! You have waited so long for this and deserve all the happiness in the world.

A massive pat on the back to the surrogate couple. The gift you have given this family is one of the greatest things that one human can do for another. May your own lives be forever blessed xx

Also, a big thank you goes out to the midwives, doctors and staff at Caboolture Hospital, Queensland, who made the documentation of this very special day possible!!! Without your wonderful support of the family and your acceptance of myself as their photographer, these beautiful images would not have been what they are <3

TODAY SHOW – Birth Photography with Selena Rollason | Brisbane

On Tuesday 20th September, 2016 I (Selena Rollason) was interviewed by Sonia Kruger and David Campbell from the Today Show.

It was wonderful to share my passion for birth photography, my work and one of my favorite birth stories.

You can watch the interview with Selena Rollason, Sonia Kruger and David Campbell here:

If you can’t view the video, here is a transcript of how it went down:

**************************************

SONIA : Well, it’s not the place you’d expect to see “lights, camera and action”. But bringing professional photographers into the birthing suite is the hot new trend for expectant parents. Take a look.

SLIDESHOW: They’re moments filled with raw emotion, and Brisbane photographer Selena Rollason is there to capture them. From the miracle of delivery, to the parents meeting their baby for the first time.. the results are nothing short of breathtaking. And the stunning shots have earned her the crown as Australia’s Professional Birth Photographer of the year.

DAVID:  Everybody’s doing it. Selena joins us now from Brisbane. Good morning.  Selena, congratulations on your award.

SELENA: Thank you. Thank you

DAVID: You’ve been in the business for five years now, and it was your son’s birth that got you started, is that right?

SELENA: Yeah that’s right. I ended up having to have a caesarean with him after quite a traumatic experience and so having photos from that birth was really important and was good to help me with healing and processing that experience. so it was after that, that I was pretty keen to provide memories like that and photos like that for other families to help them process whatever might happen when they have their babies.

SONIA: You can never tell when a baby is going to come, so you’re on call at all hours of the morning. Tell us, what does a typical birthing, photography session entail?

SELENA: Well often I’m phoned at 11 o’clock at night. Often labour kicks in the middle of the night so I’m often phoned at 11, 12, 1 o’clock in the morning.

SONIA: Yeah it never seems to happen at a convenient time does it?

SELENA: haha no it doesn’t.

DAVID: Yeah its never in the afternoon. Ah it came just around lunchtime. Fabulous.

SELENA: No babies choose when they come.

SONIA: So then what happens?

SELENA: So then I will generally head into the hospital with the families, or if its a home birth I’ll head to their home, and I’ll be with them throughout the labour and the delivery, and usually the first 2 to 3 hours after the baby arrives.

DAVID: That is a long day for you. But some people question why parents want to remember every moment of labour, what’s your response to them?

SELENA: Oh look I guess from a woman’s perspective, and as a Mum I have 4 children of my own, and from a woman’s perspective you don’t remember a great deal from the day your baby arrives. You know there’s pain, you’re drugged up often and so one of the beautiful things about birth photography is that it gives a completely different light, a different perspective on what the day actually involves and brings in a human element as opposed to a medical element or a negative element. Obviously when we think about birth photography we think about a baby being born but the human element and the emotions, the reactions, the expressions of the family. The bonding. Meeting the baby. All of those special moments are, yeah, very special.

SONIA: Yeah it’s extraordinary, exactly. And no two births are the same….

SELENA: Not at all

SONIA: ….but we hear that one was particularly memorable and was a quick delivery. What happened?

SELENA: Yeah so a couple of years ago or a little while ago, I photographed the birth of a Mum [baby] who engaged me because she’d had a very traumatic first labour and delivery and so she engaged me to capture photos of the second baby just in case things didn’t go to plan and so that she would have some amazing, beautiful memories to look back on. And when she had the baby, she actually didn’t realise that she’d had the baby so bub came so fast in the water and she got a surprise. She got such a shock that she’d successfully given birth to this baby and didn’t even realise she’d had her.

DAVID: Look its a really interesting thing. And saves us Dads carrying lots of equipment into the room so thank you Selena for doing that. You can find Selena on Facebook. Head to facebook.com/brisbanebirthphotography. I think that that business is just going to get bigger.

SONIA: I think so.

DAVID: Thank you Selena

SELENA: Thank you.

Surrogacy – A Grandmother gives birth to her Grandson

To photograph a birth for every family who comes my way is always something very special indeed!!

Being a professional birth photographer is something I am incredibly passionate about.
After having 3 very medicalised/traumatic births of my own with my eldest children, I worked incredibly hard to achieve a very natural and wonderful delivery with my 4th baby (a VBA2C – vaginal birth after 2 caesareans) in July 2015. Each of these experiences taught me about the priceless importance of having good quality photos to remember the birth day by.

So when Alice Hohenhaus first contacted me in February 2016 to photograph the birth of her son, I was immediately warmed by her beautiful story and my first thought was “Man, we NEED to create you some incredible memories to remember your baby’s arrival day”.

We talked about the sort of photos that she wanted captured and what it was that meant the most to her.

“The moment I meet my baby,” Alice said. “I want to remember how I respond and the emotion that I feel on the day.”

As a mother of 4 children myself (my eldest being a daughter aged 14), my thoughts drifted to the idea of carrying a baby for my own daughter if she needed it and my first reaction was one of “Absolutely!!!”. I felt like I immediately understood why Theresa Hohenhaus needed to be her daughters surrogate.

In the months leading up to Parker’s arrival, we discussed preferences for the day and the various paths that the actual birth might take. Because even though Theresa had already had children, there are always additional risks at play when a woman  has a baby at age 46 and they need to be taken into consideration during pregnancy and birth.

Grandmother gives birth to grandson

Thankfully everything went smoothly and the day of delivery finally arrived.

Armed with as much camera gear as I could lug, I got to work documenting the special day.

There were times when I stepped in and out of the room to allow for privacy and times where I had to provide a little reassurance that they were all doing a wonderful job.

It was a long, tough day for everyone involved and the nervousness in the air was very evident…..we all just wanted Parker to arrive and know that he was safely welcomed into the world.

I photographed every moment that I thought might be important. Every tear. Every laugh. Every joy.

It was beautiful to witness and capture such a beautiful moment for this very special family….and yes I might have shed a tear or 2 myself.

With Parker safely on his Grandmother’s chest, the emotion and atmosphere in the room turned from nervousness to completely ELECTRIC!! After waiting for so many years and going through so much, Alice was finally a mother! And the tears certainly flowed.

Theresa did an incredible job at bringing Parker into the world and should be congratulated on giving her daughter such a wonderful gift. Surrogacy is such a selfless act (particularly here in Australia where you cannot be paid for being a surrogate (outside of medical bills)) and this story shows that a mothers love for their child knows no bounds!!!

This beautiful story is an inspiration to anyone struggling with infertility, inability to have children or considering surrogacy.

BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Alice and Theresa on the arrival of Parker!
And well done for sharing what truly is an inspirational example of a Mother’s unconditional love.

Stella was welcomed in a caesarean delivery at Redcliffe Hospital.
We had lots of laughs on the day as we awaited for our turn to head to theatre. Her adoring parents have been on a
long ride to bring her into the world, eventually receiving their precious baby girl through the modern miracle of IVF.

As can be expected, many tears were shed on the day, including from the grandparents and family
who came to visit after she returned to the ward with her Mum.

So many beautiful moments were captured and it was a day to remember….made even better by a stunning double rainbow
in the sky upon leaving the hospital – the perfect ending to such a long journey!!
